Play and Children -
The relationship between play and learning in the early years
Judy Hillier
Room 120
Host: Kerry Watson
You are invited to experience the pedagogy of play through the eyes of a child within an educational environment. As a district we are striving to provide quality educational programs for young learners based on current research that exemplifies early childhood as a significant period in human development. We have embarked on a journey that is committed to supporting a philosophy of learning through play and honoring the child by focusing on the environment as the third teacher, teacher as facilitator, emergent curriculum and visible documentation. This work is based on Karen Stagnitti ‘s findings related to imaginative play skills and assessment of play, the Reggio inspired approach to learning and Neuroscience Brain Research from the University of Lethbridge. We continue to connect current research and practice to the Guiding Principles outlined in the Primary Programs Framework by Alberta Education and Kindergarten Program Statement.

What does the future of Education in Alberta hold for teachers and school leaders?
Mark Bevan
Room 124
Host: Kelly Huck
Working with participants, Mark will take the Ministerial Order for Student Learning, the Vision for Inspiring Education and the educated Alberta of 2030, and the teacher/school leader of the future document and work through a process to unpack them to explore what it would mean for teachers and school leaders in the system.
Originally from the UK, Mark Bevan brings a broad range of experiences to the leadership classroom. With beginnings as a stock boy in a grocery store, Mark has worked as a retail sales clerk, bartender, waiter, hairdresser and youth care worker before heading to the Universityof Lethbridge to become a teacher.
After 10 years of classroom teaching, Mark completed his Master's Degreein Leadership and Training from Royal Roads University and took on the role of Director of Curriculum and Instruction with Medicine Hat School Division.
While Mark has always been fascinated by numbers, this move to central office marked the beginning of his journey into using data to inform strategic conversations and program evaluations; both at the school and the jurisdiction level.
In 2006, Mark made the leap to government by joining the Ministry of Education. For the past seven years, Mark's work has focused on strategic workforce planning and the development of Alberta's education sector workforce.
Mark has led and delivered workshops on leadership, organizational change and workforce planning, and has served as a coach and a mentor (both formally and informally) to students and professionals alike.

This session highlights the importance of self care and aims to motivate participants to lead healthier, happier lives. It features the five dimensions of wellness: physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. Topics covered include time management, healthy eating, active living, sleep, distorted thinking, friendships and community. The interactive format keeps participants engaged and enables them to explore how caring for oneself can allow for more effective support to students in classrooms.

Originally from the UK, Mark Bevan brings a broad range of experiences to the leadership classroom. With beginnings as a stock boy in a grocery store, Mark has worked as a retail sales clerk, bartender, waiter, hairdresser and youth care worker before heading to the
Universityof Lethbridge to become a teacher.
